Mariners – Time to Unload

I firmly believe this is the time for the Mariners to dump salary and let the next couple of seasons move into a new direction. None of this half-assed youth movement.

This means time to let go of Ichiro, Bradley, J. Wilson, Figgins… Think of the prospects we could get for Ichiro.

The core of the next generation should be Felix, Pineda, Smoak and Saunders.

Mariners lose out on Iwakuma

Larry Stone reported that the A’s won the bidding for Japanese pitcher Hasashi Iwakuma . The Mariners need to spend their money on offense, not pitching.

Yanks interested in Bay… could they be scared of the Mariners and attempting to push up the $$$.

According to several sources, the Yankees are now showing interest in Jason Bay. With the Mariners, Mets and Angels as the front runners… could the Yankees be trying to up the price for Bay? With Cliff Lee heading to the Mariners, it is quite possible the Yankees are doing just that to force the Mariners to overpay.

If the rumors are true, the Mariners should have one of the best 1-2 starting pitching combos in the Majors with King Felix and Cliff Lee. Acquiring Lee can only be a good thing for Seattle, regardless if they are able to sign him to a long term deal. If they fall out of contention next year, Lee could be used to build up the farm system again. If they end up losing him as a Free Agent, he will still be classified as a Type A and the Mariners will get a first round draft pick. I am having a hard time seeing where this could go wrong….

I never thought I would ever root for anything from Oklahoma (especially after they stole my Sonics), but with the Sooners beat down of Oklahoma St… Iowa now appears destined for the Fiesta Bowl on January 4. I will definitely be in the crowd for that one!

Holmgren for GM

Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times wrote a great article yesterday calling for Mike Holmgren to return to the Seahawks as the GM. Brilliant! This team needs help and every decision that Tim Ruskell has made, has brought this team down to the level it is today… a 3-7 football team. Yes, Holmgren struggled to be coach and GM, but let’s not forget it was his players that he brought in mainly that helped the Seahawks to the Super Bowl om 2005.

Is Todd Lickliter the right guy to lead Iowa Basketball?

Iowa is off to their worst home start since 1931. I am beginning to wonder if Todd Lickliter is the right guy for the job. Down 52-50 to Duquesne on Tuesday night, with .8 of a second to play, Lickliter had the opportunity to draw up a play to tie or win the game. What did he come up with? An alley-oop jumper to a 6-5 Freshman at the top of the key. Not exactly a high percentage shot. It seems as though Lickliter’s biggest draw back is his ability to diagram a play coming out of a timeout. Going back to last season, he struggled in this area as well.

This year, the young Iowa squad will struggle, but it is time for Lickliter to put his stamp on this program and need to determine what the Iowa basketball identity is.

Right now, all it is… is a sinking ship.

Felix was robbed

How on earth does Felix Hernandez not win the Cy-Young. Yes Greinke, was good at the beginning of the year, but Felix was consistent all year long.
